Equally confusing, if the watch was from the beginning of the Keystone Howard era is that it has a Temeraire case rather than a Keystone one. It is probably an early Keystone Howard and quite rare.

It is also a little confusing as the serial number dates the watch to 1902 but the design of the movement is dated to 1905. This particular watch is right on the cusp of the Keystone take over and it is difficult to tell if it is one of the last old Howards or an early Keystone Howard. By American watch making standards, Howards are comparatively rare. The Howard Watch Co produced fewer than half a million watches while Keystone Howard produced just over 1.5 million. The manufacture of Keystone Howard Pocket watches continued until 1930. Howard retired in 1882 but the company continued producing watches to his design until 1903 when it was taken over by the Case making company Keystone. With his financial partner Charles Rice and with the patented designs by Reed including the whiplash regulator, he produced his first watches in 1858 and introduced crown wind in 1878 while most other manufacturers were still using key wind. Howard by arrangement took much of the machinery to his new factory in Roxbury, Massachusetts where it was retooled for his design of a revolutionary new Pocket watch.
